ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I acknowledge the histories, contributions and legacies of the African Nova Scotia people and communities who have been here for over 400 years. I acknowledge the appropriation and monetization of wisdom traditions that originated with Black and Brown communities. I continue to engage in the messy work of uncovering these patterns, supporting our staff and community members in anti-racism learning journeys, and uplifting and directing resources to support BIPOC-led initiatives.
I acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which the Mi’kmaq, Wəlastəkwiyik, and Peskotomuhkatiyik Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1726. Irespect the Treaties that were made on these territories, I acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and dedicate myself to moving forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration. Acknowledging the land that we are on is one way that we are working towards decolonization across campus.
